My stunning mistery companion

Journal Entry: Fri May 23, 2008, 12:17 PM
I Say...

This last week was full of ups and downs...

For the ups:
*Had the great great greaat pleasure of working with Tonspi at his studio. Tonspi is not only one of the photographers I admire the most, but is also crazy as hell... Just being around him makes me take better pictures (ok, enough ass kissing...) :)

His flickr: [link]

*What I learned during this session:
- Studio light rules, period.
- Good make up = bling bling, and bling bling = the "wow" factor
- RAW RAW AND RAW (format) from now on
- Great modelling is as close as great acting as possible (at least on the physical side).
- A Nikon D2X is a good excuse for not going to the gym to lift weights, specially when a 2kg lens is attached to it. That thing killed my arms after 2 hours of holding it.

*What I didn't like:
- I always saw photography as a medium of escape.
That means that since I don't drink (a lot) or do (too many) drugs, photography was my only way to create my own little worlds.

It seems to me (and correct me if I'm wrong) that most "glamour/fashion" photography today is empty...By that I mean that there's no story behind the images, they're just cold, shiny things, and they all look the same (a woman, good light, lot's of make up - check my pictures :) ).

I don't mean to disrespect anyone, it's just an observation (and again, maybe I'm missing something, as usual), but I feel that there's a difference between taking 300 shots of a model moving around trying her best to look cool, and taking 5 (semi or full) pre-thought and conceived shots of the same model without the bling bling.

The difference is not in the number of shots.

Yes, of course there's a difference of styles, there's the "lack of time" factor and there are the comercial obligations to consider, etc etc...
Anyway, I'm rambling and this whole thing is not really important (are you even still reading ? :) ).

The fact is that:
studio light+great model+makeup+a bit of imagination = winning formula

Emphasis on "a bit of imagination" though, I guess that's what makes a truly beautiful picture.
My point:

* Just saw a copy of my first book on sale at a local bookstore (= never thought I'd live to see that happening......
All of the sudden all the notes, scraps, diaries and time wasted writing on toilet paper (shitty airport toilet paper) were actually worth it, with that little book right there on the poetry section.

:)

* The second one is coming. For now the launch date is for August. No specific day yet.

Unlit Hallway

My book has finally arrived (= I'm sorting stuff out for launch (date to be decided).

It's called Silhuetas, it's the end of the portfolio of the same name.
52 photographs
10 poems/texts

Made in collab. with Nastio Mosquito and his design company (DZZzzz) [link] who took care of the graphic design and overall mood of the book.

I am therefore, and truly, only if momentarily and "halfway there", happy (=

The wolves

I Say...

A couple of random things (nothing important, really) :

* You start realizing how old you're getting, when your own parents forget your birthday :.)

-

* People like Sadie ([link]) and Lunga ([link]) make me love not being a robot.
The human body is extraordinary, specially when it's tamed and pushed to it's limits (actually, what are it's limits? mine is chocolate...)

-

* The more I contemplate switching careers, the scarier it gets, and the more likely it becomes. I like scary.

-

* Never, ever, ever, eat cornflakes with chocolate ice cream and coca-cola. Even if you're bored (specially if you're bored). The results are somewhat... Unexpected...:)

-

* It's time dA catches up with flickr, regarding club management options. It's really behind in terms of options and functionality.

-

* Having said that, I'm glad I found these people. Go check them out (c'mon, make it thoroughly, check all cavities and favs. I'm sure you'll find something interesting :.)

----------------

* Oh, and get those hands of yours on the following albums:
Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago (one of my favourites as of last week)
Tapes n' Tapes - The loon
